Plain Dresses

Plain dresses are the easiest pieces to style. One colour means the cut and fit do the talking. Change your shoes, jacket or jewellery and you have a new look. Our plain dresses are made in England in fitted pencil and A-line shapes. Choose navy, black and other block colours in stretch crepe. Most come in sizes S to XXL. A plain dress is also the simplest piece to wear again and again.

Why a plain dress works so hard

Without a print, the eye goes to the shape. Our pattern-cutting heritage since 1985 really shows here. A good cut shows off the waist and lengthens the leg. Clean colour also photographs well and never looks dated.

A plain dress can go to work on Monday and a wedding on Saturday. You simply change what you wear with it.

Styles in this edit

The Brienne and Desdemona are fitted pencil dresses with a clean line. The Ginny has a keyhole neckline. The Plaza adds a cutout for a modern edge. The Celia is a plain shift with a detachable bow. The Ramona is a sleeved A-line swing dress, and the Moraig has an easy A-line skirt.

How to style a plain dress

  • Add a print through a scarf or bag.
  • Layer a contrast jacket from our coats and jackets.
  • Choose a statement necklace or bold earrings.
  • Try a coloured court shoe for a lift.

Fabric, fit and colour

Most plain styles use Moss Crepe, Ripple Crepe or Bi-Stretch. These fabrics hold their shape and resist creases. Many styles have a concealed back zip and a centre back vent. Most sit on or just below the knee.

Black and navy are the most versatile choices. They suit work, weddings and evenings alike. A plain blue or green dress feels fresh but still easy to style.

Think about where you will wear it most. Darker shades suit office days and autumn. Brighter shades suit summer events and parties. If you love one style, buying it in two colours gives you twice the outfits.
